“My Government has prioritized agriculture sector as a turning point that will free our people from the poverty, hopelessness and dependency on aid.” Said H.E Governor Ukur Yatani. “It is in this regard that we allocated over Kshs. 317M to the sector and further purchased 8 modern tractors, seeds and extensive extension services in the last financial year. This financial year,we set aside Kshs. 364M to improve and sustain agricultural production further.” The governor said.
Speaking at the launch of Agricultural Sector Development Plan, Amb. Yatani said the plan could not come at a better time than this since it’s an important roadmap that will guide and prepare the sector to address the challenges in food security in clear and focused manner.
“The devolved system of government requires that counties chart their own development paths given their unique condition faced by each county”. The governor said. He also highlighted the fact that all development projects are expected to be as consultative and inclusive as possible. The governor also mentioned the fact that the plan was prepared in line with Marsabit County Citizen Participation Framework. “It is therefore a great honor to be the first County to launch a people driven Strategic plan”. Said H.E Governor Yatani.
He sincerely thanked GIZ and the German Government for supporting the development of the Sector plan and their long time commitment to development activities in the County. He also thanked H.E Amb. Andreas Peschke for finding time to come and launch the Plan.
Ambassador Peschke acknowledged the long association with Marsabit. With the support of GiZ and German Government, early this year he handed over 20 motorbikes to Governor Yatani for agricultural extension services. German government has also supported the Lake Turkana Wind power, a mega energy project having supported it to a tune of 20 Million Euros.
He said that Agricultural Sector Development Plan was developed as part of their Development Cooperation between County Government & GIZ with first consultation supported by USAID.
He said the implementation was very crucial & it is now the responsibility of the County Government to ensure it is implemented. However German-Kenya development cooperation was ready to assist with Capacity building, infrastructure and irrigation.
