The inaugural Forum for The Development of Marsabit County Renewable Energy Master plan kicked off today at Goff Hotel, Marsabit.
Speaking during the function, the County Executive Committee Member for Energy,Lands Housing and Urban planning , Ms Yasmin Abdulkadir, said the County is richly endowed with huge untapped potential in renewable energy, especially wind and solar despite the fact that the County is still, by and large, powered by diesel.
Ms Yasmin said many other upcoming urban Centres are still hamstrung by access to electricity which, she observed, was inhibiting the growth of the economies of those urban centres.
She said capacity for renewable energy, especially wind and solar, needs to be determined across the County to ensure maximum utilization.
The CEC member said the main source of energy in the County is firewood while electricity, she said, is only available in urban centres of Marsabit and Moyale and that the county is not served by electricity from the National grid.
“Power generation relies on diesel generators and a small wind plant to supplement it. Moyale town is connected to the electricity grid from Ethiopia and plans are at an advanced stage to connect Sololo town and the neighboring markets to the same grid,” she said.
The County Energy Chief said the number of households with electricity connection stands at 1,273. The proportion of households using firewood as the main source of fuel, she added, stands at 92.6%, Charcoal 5.6%, paraffin 1.6% and biomass residue 0.2%. Households depending on firewood for lighting, she further added, stands at 68.9%, paraffin 27.5% and electricity 3.6 %.
Noting that the department of energy is committed to provide efficient and effective leadership in green energy for sustainable social-economic development of the County, the department’s head said the County seriously intends to tap into the unlimited renewable energy resources which abound in it.
Consultants from Sawa Consulting Firm took the participants through an overview of energy planning and the methodology of how the firm intends to execute the energy master plan for the County.
The participants were also taken through energy assessment process, opportunities for energy resource management, comprehensive analysis of the use of various forms of energy at domestic, institutional and small and micro enterprise levels; analysis of each type of energy in terms of availability cost and affordability and how best to map out and establish a database of energy resources in the County.
