Governor, Marsabit County
H.E. Mohamud M. Ali is a distinguished public servant and seasoned leader currently serving as the Governor of Marsabit County. Born on June 19, 1973, in Uran Ward within Sololo Sub-County, he has built an impressive career that spans technical expertise, national leadership, and county governance. With a strong foundation in Building Economics and extensive experience in public policy and administration, he has consistently demonstrated commitment to transformative leadership and sustainable development. Governor Ali holds a Master of Arts in Public Policy and Administration from Kenyatta University and a Bachelor of Arts in Building Economics and Management from the University of Nairobi, which he obtained in 1993. His early education was shaped at Starehe Boys’ Centre, where he completed his secondary studies in 1988, and Uran Primary School, where he began his academic journey. This solid educational background laid the groundwork for his transition from a technical professional into a prominent figure in public service. His leadership journey reflects a steady rise through the ranks of public service. He began his professional career as an Assistant Quantity Surveyor in the Ministry of Roads and Public Works between 1998 and 2002, gaining valuable experience in infrastructure development. He later served as the Member of Parliament for Moyale Constituency from 2007 to 2013, where he actively contributed to legislative processes and championed development initiatives for his constituents. Between 2008 and 2011, he served as Assistant Minister in the Ministry of Special Programmes, where he played a key role in national development efforts and also served as an alternate Board Member and Chair of the Policy and Strategy Committee for the Global Fund. Governor Ali served as Chairman of the National Hospital Insurance Fund from 2014 to 2017, where he led significant reforms in the health sector, including the introduction of outpatient services in 2015 and advancing the country’s transition toward Universal Health Coverage. Since 2017, he has served as the Governor of Marsabit County, providing strategic leadership and oversight in driving development across the county. In addition to his gubernatorial role, he serves as Chairman of the Transport, Infrastructure and Energy Committee at the Council of Governors and as Chairman of the Frontier Counties Development Council, while also having served as Chief Whip at the Council of Governors in 2018.
