The people of Marsabit County celebrated the 62nd Jamhuri Day in a special way this year, as the main event was held in Korr Town, Laisamis Constituency. The Governor led residents in marking the day that commemorates Kenya’s independence and the birth of the Republic.
In his address , the Governor said Jamhuri Day is more than just a holiday, but a time to remember how Kenya gained its freedom and to thank the heroes who made it possible. He reminded everyone that while Kenya is now richer and more developed than in 1963, some places like Marsabit have not always enjoyed equal progress.
He praised the 2010 Constitution, saying it brought government closer to the people through devolution. The Governor noted that, thanks to devolution, Marsabit has seen new roads, health centers, water projects, and better schools. He said people in Korr and other remote areas now feel part of Kenya’s story.
The Governor explained that government services are now much closer to the people. He announced that four new sub-counties have been created in Marsabit, including Korr, Jaldesa, Uran, and Ileret. This means that chiefs and administrators are now nearer, and people do not have to travel far to get help.
He thanked President Ruto and the national government for supporting these changes and for helping Marsabit overcome its history of being left behind.
The Governor also spoke about the severe drought facing the county. He said climate change has made life hard for pastoralists, with less water and pasture for animals. The county needs about Ksh. 600 million to provide food, water, and health services to affected families. He asked for help from partners and aid groups so that no one is left hungry or in need.
Peace was another big topic. The Governor said Marsabit is now more peaceful, but everyone must work to keep it that way. He urged leaders and citizens to avoid division and hate, and to always choose peace, no matter what.
Korr Residents will no longer have to travel for miles to access government services. The new Deputy County Commissioner is already in place, with all offices open and serving the people. As Deputy Governor Gubo put it, “This is historic. Government offices are open here; the DCC and all officers are now your neighbors.”
The area MP Hon. Joseph Lekuton and several MCAs pointed out, that the new sub-county will not only provide jobs but also create more locations and sub-locations, multiplying opportunities for the people of Korr. The Governor’s push for equitable development across the county was recognized again and again—with every leader, from the majority leader in the County assembly to the grassroots community leaders , praising his drive, his accessibility, and his hands-on approach.
Members of the County assembly pointed to the new sub-county as a game-changer that will create jobs, bring services closer, and give hope to local youth. MCAs Admen Leruk and Burcha Daniel both highlighted the Governor’s role in pushing for the creation of Korr sub-county and supporting every step of development, even as they called for further action to address drought and local issues.
Community leaders applauded the Governor for ensuring that development reaches all corners of Marsabit, Elder Mzee Alwale spoke for many when he thanked the President for delivering on his promise, but he reserved special appreciation for the Governor, whose support and initiative made the dream of a Korr sub-county possible. “We thank our Governor for always standing with us and never forgetting Korr,” he said, echoing the gratitude felt across the crowd.
